The surgeons and medical team at Orthopaedic Specialists are dedicated to giving back to their community. Based on the positive feedback from last year, our Director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center, Dr. Tyson Cobb, is excited to offer, for the second year in a row, financial assistance for children with financial needs to attend the 5-day SpringHill Day Camp in July 2016.
Dr. Cobb believes that the experiences and memories offered by SpringHill Day Camp will last a lifetime. Last year Dr. Cobb was able to sponsor over a dozen kids who, without financial assistance, would not have been able to attend. “This year,” says Dr. Cobb, “I would like to double the number of kids we sponsor by increasing awareness of this meaningful event. It gives me deep satisfaction to be able to provide children in our community the ability to participate in activities of personal and spiritual growth and development.” He went on to say, “Last year, we were able to sponsor a single mother with 5 kids who had an annual income of $18,000. We awarded full scholarships for 3 of her eligible children. I believe we made a difference and hope we can do it for her again this year…as well as for others that didn’t know about the opportunity.”
SpringHill is a summer day camp for children who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade. The program is designed for children with varied abilities. All camp activities integrate faith and fun through age-appropriate large and small group interactions involving music, dancing, games, skits, crafts, and bible teaching. High-adventure activities include archery, bungee trampoline, climbing wall, giant swings, paintball target practice, rope ladder, and bounce house slip-n-slide and waterslide. All camp activities are held onsite at the Heritage Church campuses from 9 am to 4 pm (Rock Island Campus July 18-22; Bettendorf Campus July 25-29). An extended Day Camp option is available for child pick-up between 4 pm and 5:30 pm.
SpringHill Day Camps have been operating since 1969. SpringHill places the highest value on providing each person with an exceptional and safe experience. After being interviewed, reference checked, and background checked, all counselors receive 40-80 hours of intensive job specific training. There is one counselor to every five campers. To ensure each child is provided with the most amazing experience, all counselors are trained in behavior management and a strict anti-bullying policy is enforced.
“We want families to know that the SpringHill camp is coming to the Quad Cities and that funding is available,” says Dr. Cobb. Financial support is based on need and not simply on a cut and dry income level. A scholarship team at Heritage Church evaluates each applicant’s needs, and awards different levels of scholarship. Eligibility requirements will vary, and financial hardship, as well as other factors, will be taken into consideration.
