Russian doctors learn about American healthcare and technology
Moscow-area doctors make a stop at the Mississippi Valley Surgery Center to meet with OS surgeons
(Davenport, IA, Tuesday, May 6) – Representatives from a Moscow Orthopedic clinic will spend the remainder of the week in the Quad Cities – hoping to learn firsthand how latest medical technology can help future patients in Russia. The contingent represents the Orthospine Clinic, the first clinic in Moscow, Russia, to treat musculoskeletal problems.
Today the guests began a three-day tour of the Mississippi Valley Surgery Center (MVSC), a state of the art outpatient facility based in Davenport, Iowa.
“The trend in American healthcare is to use medical techniques and best practices that help patients avoid lengthy hospital stays that can be expensive as well as protect patients from a higher risk of infections in hospitals,” explained, John Dooley, a Davenport anesthesiologist and administrator at the MVSC.
“The global medical community is beginning to see the benefit of performing procedures in an outpatient setting from both a quality and cost perspective,” adds Dr. John Hoffman, Orthopaedic Specialists, Davenport. “For example, joint replacements just five years ago required a major incision, long-acting anesthetic and extended convalescence. Medical innovation now allows this procedure to be performed safely and effectively in the outpatient setting. Patient satisfaction has increased tremendously.”
“We want to learn from our Russian colleagues how they are treating patients,” says Dr. Dooley. “At the same time we hope they can take back knowledge to ensure better care for Russian citizens without burdening an already stressed foreign economy which often results in poor access to health care due to high costs and expensive technology.”
Among the procedures the Russian delegation will observe this week include minimally invasive spine surgery, total joint replacements, arthroscopic knee surgery and pain management procedures. They will meet American orthopaedic surgeons from Orthopaedic Specialists (OS) including Dr. John Hoffman and Dr. Tuvi Mendel, neurosurgeon Dr. Anthony Maioriello, Midwest Brain and Spine, and Anesthesiologist, Dr. John Dooley all from Davenport.
“We are very excited to share and exchange experiences and knowledge,” says Dr. Maioriello. “Physicians are very proud of our ability at the Surgery Center to provide convenient, quality care. Most of us are in healthcare to make sure patients get back to life with a full recovery as quickly as possible, no matter what country you call home.”
The contingent includes: Vladimir Valeryevich Golubev, Candidate of Medical Science; Orthopedist; Sergey Leonidovich Migachev, Anesthesiologist, Pain Specialist Inna Scherbina, Chief Executive Officer, Orthospine Clinic. The Bettendorf Rotary Club is serving as the international host during their visit, which also included trips to Iowa City and Chicago.
